Canstruction is an international non-profit food charity working to “can”struct a world without hunger. We achieve this through artistic exhibitions that capture peoples’ attentions and imaginations and bring awareness to hunger issues around the world.
Partnering with Novelis was an exciting opportunity for us, as we worked together to “can”struct three unique models at their headquarters in Atlanta this week, including a larger-than-life evercanTM beverage can, a model of the Ford F-150 truck and a model of the Shanghai Pearl Tower – all made with Novelis aluminum.
We at Canstruction are often considered to be experts when it comes to cans, but never before had we worked side-by-side with professionals from the world’s largest producer of aluminum can sheet. Suffice it to say, we both had a lot to learn from each other, and it was quite an exciting day for the “can engineers” from both organizations.
With the help of 18 Novelis volunteers and three Canstruction experts, we “can”structed three nearly 6-foot tall replicas of the latest innovative products made from Novelis aluminum. The eye-catching sight of these models and their construction brought in passersby from the sidewalks to learn more about our cause and the engineering behind some of the cans and the models.
The 3,200 food and beverage cans used in the project will be donated at the end of the week to the Atlanta Community Food Bank (ACFB), which serves 80,600 hungry individuals each week through various programs.
With nearly 1 in 7 people in metro Atlanta relying on hunger relief organizations and meal service programs to feed themselves and their families, these donations truly make a difference in the daily lives of many. And these numbers increase over the summer months, when school children no longer receive free or subsidized school lunches.
As a member of the Feeding America network, the ACFB is responsible for providing food for more than 164,000 children and 64,000 seniors and relies on the support of organizations like Canstruction to do so. Daphne Hill, ACFB marketing and promotions manager, describes Canstruction events as one of the most unique initiatives supporting the food bank, providing interest while exposing the public to the issue of hunger and poverty in Georgia.
While Atlanta is our hometown and certainly close to our hearts, we also hold Canstruction competitions and special events in more than 150 cities around the world today, and as a result, have helped raise nearly 30 million pounds of food globally. At Canstruction, we believe it all starts with one can. One Can Make a Difference®, and this week at Novelis, we did.
