Everything we do at Novelis begins with our commitment to the health, safety and well-being of our colleagues, customers and communities.
We owe our status as a world-class manufacturer to our employees who continually anticipate and exceed the needs and expectations of all those we work with across the globe. At Novelis, each of us is driven to produce excellence.
Novelis’ 12,000+ employees worldwide are the driving force behind our forward-thinking innovation, and its their talent that sets us apart as a 21st century manufacturer. We are committed to providing our employees with the opportunities and support they need to further grow their talents and take pride in a diverse team of professionals who represent our unmatched global presence.
Novelis’ worldwide locations enable us to embrace diverse cultures and communities, and push boundaries through unique thinking and different perspectives. To maximize the experience of our employees, we rotate high-potential colleagues through many parts of our business – be it automotive, beverage can or high-end specialties – in order to prepare them to lead across our global organization.
Within the company, Novelis set records in FY16 for safety performance, achieving a three-year low in total recordable incidents as well as improving the number of days away from work rate by more than 25 percent year-over-year. As part of our Novelis Safety System, we use a systematic approach for identifying, managing and mitigating safety risks in our operations.
FY17 was a record year for safety performance within Novelis.
Alongside ensuring the health and safety of our employees, Novelis provides them with opportunities to develop and enhance their skills and grow professionally. This includes encouraging grassroots-led initiatives to make the workplace and our communities safer. One such initiative is Novelis Prepared with the goal of having 100% of our colleagues trained in CPR, AED and basic first aid.
Novelis Neighbor is our global program for sponsoring and coordinating our community engagement and charitable investment efforts. As part of our worldwide corporate social responsibility campaign, Novelis employees supported 350 community projects at 32 sites in 11 countries in FY16. These projects focus on three pillars: making communities safer; supporting Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education; and, increasing recycling by consumers. In total, those efforts represent more than $5.5 million in community investments.
As part of the program, we also organize an annual Novelis Volunteer Month, which funds and executes large-scale employee volunteer projects each October across all of our operations and facilities worldwide.
For more than a decade, Novelis has supported and partnered with Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit that builds or refurbishes homes for low-income families, with labor provided by the families themselves and community volunteers. In FY16, Novelis fulfilled a five-year, $500,000 commitment to Habitat and our partnership with the organization is still going strong.
In fact, Novelis has pledged to donate an additional $1 million to Habitat for Humanity over the next five years in honor of the company’s fifth annual “Novelis Volunteer Month”. The pledge, which represents a 100 percent increase over Novelis’ financial contribution to Habitat for Humanity during the previous five years, reinforces our support of Habitat for Humanity’s mission to build a world where everyone lives in a decent, safe and affordable home.
Novelis also partners with Discovery Education – the global leader in standards-based digital content for K-12 and sister company of the Discovery Channel – to develop cutting-edge resources to educate young people about the value and importance of recycling. The all-digital materials, available at www.lifeofacan.com, include a video, lesson plans, at-home activities and an exploration map called Cantown through which students, teachers and parents can learn about the life cycle of a can.
With Discovery Education’s expansive network reaching 3.5 million educators and 38 million students, Novelis’ Life of a Can aims to inspire the next generation to be lifelong recyclers.
For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology (FIRST) is a program that inspires students to engage in robotics competitions that build technical skills, self-confidence, communication skills and leadership. The investment Novelis makes in the program globally supports more than 460,000 students and results in them being twice as likely to major in science or engineering. In addition to direct funding of more than 40 FIRST teams globally, Novelis donates aluminum annually for 3,100 FIRST Robotics Competition’s Kit of Parts. Novelis engineers also serve as mentors for local teams in their communities.
