Low Carbon Aluminum – The Circular Pathway
Aluminum made by Novelis is used in more than 225 different car models from leading automotive manufacturers. Well-known brands such as Audi, Airbus, Coca Cola and Samsung are among our customers and end users. Novelis means customer-focused innovation and exemplary commitment to sustainability. Our research and development centers are continuously working on process and product innovations.
About 60% of the aluminum we use is obtained by recycling existing aluminum. In doing so, we conserve natural resources and create products with a better eco-balance. To produce aluminum from recycled material, only 5 percent of the energy required, compared to the energy required to produce it from primary raw material. This means that 95 percent of the energy and emissions can be avoided. Aluminum is the ideal material for circular economy – for a sustainable future.
As the world’s largest recycler of aluminum and producer of flat-rolled aluminum product, we leverage aluminum’s unique properties to deliver sustainable solutions to our customers by maintaining a high level of recycled-metal inputs across our product portfolio – a competitive differentiator and a key component of our sustainability strategy.
Our manufacturing model not only reduces the energy, water, landfill waste and greenhouse gas emissions associated with our operations, it also lowers the carbon footprint of products made using our aluminum.
We recycle more than 82 billion beverage cans each year, turning them back into new beverage cans in just roughly 60 days. We also created the first–and largest–automotive closed-loop recycling system in the world. The closed-loop system recycles scrap aluminum from the automotive manufacturing process. Closed-loop recycling allows us to take back as much of our customers’ aluminum scrap as possible, turning it directly back into the same product again. Closing the loop preserves the value of the alloy, reduces recycling and transportation costs, minimizes environmental impact and establishes a secure supply chain.
This process requires just five percent of the energy and emits only five percent of the greenhouse gases compared to using primary aluminum, helping Novelis and its customers drive toward zero waste to landfills and greater carbon reduction.
Our people are our greatest asset. We make it a priority to identify the very best talent and provide them with the right growth and development opportunities throughout their career. By embracing diversity and empowering our employees to pursue their curiosities and test their ideas, Novelis employees are able to enhance their skillsets and work across business segments and geographies to gain new experience. Novelis employs some of the most talented people in our industry. This, coupled with our culture of collaboration and transparency, enables us to safely deliver high-quality products to our customers around the world.
In order to stay ahead of the global competition, Novelis invests in specialists and managers at an early stage and, in some cases, enables exchanges with its international plants. Diversity, equal opportunities and inspiring women for technical professions are important to us. An apprenticeship is your springboard for the future.
