Focused on attaining the platinum certificate from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB), which evaluates a building’s emissions throughout its entire life cycle, the company set new benchmarks regarding sustainability and quality. Novelis ff2® pre-painted aluminum facade cladding played an important role in the awarding of the DGNB certificate for the Stiebel Eltron Energy Campus.
With 90 years of experience in house and heat pump technology, Stiebel Eltron wishes to increase knowledge share regarding this technology with the training of craftsmen and engineers. Completed in 2015, the Energy Campus is central to this mission, covering nearly 4,000 m2 and with the capacity to host 6,000 trainees per year.
From the early stages of the planning process of the campus, the designer and architects cooperated closely with industry partners. According to the standards of the DGNB award, sustainable construction demands not only reducing logistics between manufacturing and the construction site, but also material choices that consider high environmental requirements in production and dismantling.

With this in mind, architectural firm Hegger-Hegger-Schleiff chose Novelis pre-painted aluminum ff2® for the training center’s facade.
The construction company, Schneider die klempner gmbh, installed 2 mm coil-coated aluminum cassettes to cover the building in an attractive anodized look. The AIMg3 alloy enables material savings of one third compared to commercial aluminum with the AIMg1 alloy.
Stiebel Eltron chose the anodized shade C34 for the facade design. This high-quality surface coating with a PVdF content of 80 percent has proven successful in many projects globally and offers exceptional weather resistance even under extreme climatic conditions. The color retention and low maintenance costs were also deciding factors for the choice of material.
In addition, pre-painted aluminum with an anodized look can be processed without problems and with less effort and cost compared to individually batch-anodized elements.
A dynamic effect was created at the Energy Campus through the monolithic rear-ventilated cassettes with different heights in the grid dimension of 150/300/600/900 mm. Clip-cassettes with a length of up to 3,700 mm were installed piece-by-piece on a BWM-substructure with invisible fastening, ensuring a uniform appearance across the building.
Each cassette was installed on two covered clips on the lower edge and fixed with rivets with a fix and gliding point on the upper edge. This combination of a fix and gliding point on the upper edge and two covered clips on the lower edge enables thermal expansion behind the cassettes.
Aluminum facade cladding also offers complete and unmixed deconstruction and recycling. It can be recycled 100 percent without any problems or loss of quality – and without limited repetitions. In this way, the 2,850 m2 of facade cladding played an important role in awarding the DGNB certificate, one of the most prestigious awards for sustainable constructions.
In addition to the environmentally friendly facade, the building includes solar cells on the roof with a power of approximately 120 kWp, modern ventilation systems and a water tank. To show its product range, Stiebel Eltron also used innovative measurement and control technologies in the Energy Campus.
The result is a building that produces and saves more energy than it needs. The training center even exceeds DGNB’s demanded 80 percent performance level with a measurement of 85.36 percent. Architecturally, the Stiebel Eltron Energy Campus is a pioneer in the field of sustainable and environmentally friendly construction.
