Strategic collaboration to provide advanced aluminium solutions to the Aerospace industry 

thyssenkrupp Aerospace, one of the world’s leading supply chain management and third-party logistics service providers for the commercial Aerospace industry, and Novelis, a leading sustainable aluminium solutions provider and the world leader in aluminium rolling and recycling, have renewed their strategic partnership through a multi-year agreement. 

Under the agreement, Novelis will supply specialized, aerospace-grade aluminium from its facilities in Koblenz, Germany, and Zhenjiang, China, to several thyssenkrupp Aerospace key markets in Europe and Asia. The contract provides for the ongoing supply of premium, aircraft-grade aluminium plates and sheets from Novelis to thyssenkrupp Aerospace, reinforcing Novelis’ strategic importance as a supplier of innovative aluminium products for the aerospace sector. 

We are very pleased that our global Aerospace unit is prolonging our partnership with Novelis. Securing a reliable, long-term supply of high-quality aluminium is critical to ensuring that we can consistently meet the needs of our customers. This agreement reinforces our commitment to delivering excellence by ensuring material availability and reliability for our customers’ supply chains, an important part of our Materials-as-a-Service strategy. This year marks a remarkable milestone for Novelis: 20 years of innovation, sustainability, and leadership. Since we began in January 2005, we have transformed the aluminum industry through groundbreaking achievements and a steadfast commitment to our company’s Purpose of Shaping a Sustainable World Together.

Over the past 20 years, Novelis has redefined what’s possible in the aluminum industry. Take a look at some highlights from our incredible journey:

On January 6, 2005, Novelis launched as a biproduct of Alcan. Just two years later, in May 2007, we joined the Aditya Birla Group (ABG) under Hindalco, opening doors to global growth and new possibilities.

In July 2011, we began a new chapter in North America by investing in the Oswego Plant, paving the way for automotive as a key value stream in the region. By November 2011, we solidified our presence in Asia by acquiring full ownership of Novelis Korea, previously a joint venture.

Growth continued in April 2012 as we entered China with a single CASH line for automotive in Changzhou, followed closely by the opening of the Yeongju Recycling Center in October 2012. These milestones underscored our leadership in sustainable innovation.

By July 2013, we expanded Pinda’s capacity in Brazil by 50%, strengthening our South American operations. Shortly after, in October 2013, we increased production capacity in South Korea by 50%.

Sustainability remained our focus and in September 2014, Novelis achieved 50% recycled content, a bold milestone that set an industry benchmark. This was followed by completing the Nachterstedt Recycling Center in February 2015, cementing our commitment to world-class recycling.

The acquisition of Aleris in April 2020 transformed Novelis, expanding our reach with entry into aerospace. By December 2020, the Guthrie automotive line was operational, meeting growing automotive market demands in North America.

Our focus on carbon neutrality led to the creation of the Net Zero Lab Valais in February 2022. That same year, we broke ground on the Guthrie Recycling Facility in May 2022, invested in Sortera’s recycling technology in July 2022, and launched construction of facilities in Bay Minette and Ulsan in late 2022.

In May 2024, we reached an incredible milestone: 63% recycled content. Also in 2024, we set a new path forward, introducing Novelis 3×30, our bold roadmap to “Advance Aluminum as the Material of Choice with Circular Solutions” by achieving three critical objectives by 2030.

When Li Auto set out to design its first fully electric, multi-purpose vehicle (MPV), the Li MEGA, the Beijing-based automotive start-up aimed to push the boundaries of technology to increase battery range and enhance the driver experience. To achieve this ambitious goal, Li Auto needed a partner with expertise in lightweight materials and advanced engineering solutions. Enter Novelis.

The Partnership Begins

Li Auto partnered with Novelis’ Customer Solution Center in Shanghai, marking the start of a dynamic collaboration. Together, the two teams set out to incorporate Novelis’ lightweight aluminum solutions into nine critical parts of Li Auto’s premium model.

Innovative Solutions

One of the standout features of the Li MEGA is its use of Novelis Advanz™ 6HS-s650, a custom-made alloy designed for structural applications that demand high in-service strength and superior crash performance. This innovative material contributed to an 11% weight reduction compared to the original aluminum design.

Technical Excellence in Production

Novelis’ involvement didn’t stop at the design phase. We provided extensive technical support during the production phase of the Li MEGA. Our expertise in mixed-material construction and joining technologies was invaluable in bringing the vehicle to life. Members of Novelis’ Customer Solution Center worked closely with the equipment supplier to determine the optimal process parameters for stud-welding s650 crash parts on the vehicle’s underbody.

Through numerous welding tests conducted both in the lab and on the production line, the teams from Li Auto and Novelis achieved high-quality stud welding, a crucial factor in the successful mass production of the Li MEGA.

The collaboration between Novelis and Li Auto on the Li MEGA has set a new benchmark in the electric vehicle industry. By leveraging Novelis’ advanced aluminum solutions and technical expertise, Li Auto was able to develop a vehicle that not only delivers exceptional performance and safety but also enhances the overall driving experience through innovative design and lightweight construction.

This partnership showcases the power of collaboration and innovation in driving the future of sustainable mobility. The success of the Li MEGA is a testament to what can be achieved when industry leaders join forces to push the boundaries of what is possible in automotive design and engineering.

Novelis is taking significant strides in advancing sustainability, as highlighted in a recent article featuring Suzanne Lindsay-Walker, Vice President for Sustainability, published by Fastmarkets. The article delves into Novelis’ release of its FY2024 Sustainability Report, showcasing a 27% reduction in absolute carbon emissions since 2016 across scopes 1, 2, and 3. With an average recycled content of 63% in its aluminum rolled products, Novelis recycled over 2.3 million tonnes of aluminum, including 82 billion used beverage cans.

As part of the Novelis 3×30 vision, the company aims to reach 75% recycled content by 2030. Achieving this goal involves strategic partnerships to return more scrap into the system, decrease primary metal usage, and increase the utilization of end-of-life scrap, particularly from automotive sources.

Lindsay-Walker highlighted Novelis’ focus on scrap separation technology, policy advancements, and collaboration with customers to achieve circularity and decarbonization.

In 2011, the bold decision by Novelis to focus the company’s business model on recycling, has led to great investments in increasing recycling capacity and capabilities, including the construction one of the world’s largest aluminium recycling centers that has transformed the aluminium industry. Today, the Nachterstedt Aluminium Recycling Center (NARC) celebrates its 10th anniversary, marking a decade of pioneering innovation and sustainability with Novelis taking the position as a clear recycling leader in the aluminium market 

A Transformative Investment 

With a total investment of more than €300 million, NARC was constructed as a state-of-the-art facility capable of recycling up to 400,000 tonnes of aluminium annually. With its geographical central location within Europe, NARC provides high-recycled-content ingots to Novelis Europe’s rolling plants for further processing into low-carbon, innovative aluminium solutions for many key players within the Automotive, Beverage Packaging and Specialties Industries.  

At NARC, we can cast aluminium ingots for car bodysides made from 86% scrap. Aluminium ingots for beverage can bodies with a recycling content close to 100% showcase our way of decarbonizing aluminium for consumer goods and our strong ambition towards a fully circular economy.

Driving Sustainability and Lower Emissions 

Recycling aluminium reduces energy consumption by around 95% compared to primary aluminium production and reduces carbon intensity to a comparable level. In that respect, NARC is lowering carbon emissions by around 3.7 million tonnes of CO2e per year, which not only reduces the plant’s carbon footprint to an enormous extent, but also substantially helps lowering carbon emissions in the downstream aluminium value chain.

Continued Recycling Leadership 

NARC is not just a facility – it’s a symbol of Novelis’ vision for a circular future. The site makes a decisive contribution to achieving Novelis’ ambitious sustainability goals of becoming the provider of lowest carbon emitting flat-rolled aluminium solutions with less than 3 tonnes of CO2e per tonne aluminium shipped by 2030 and to be carbon neutral by 2050, or sooner. Advanced sorting technology added at Nachterstedt Recycling plant in 2024 will further optimize the utilization of post-consumer aluminium scrap for high-quality aluminium products. The new technology is expected to avoid the use of around 8,500 tonnes of primary aluminium per year resulting in a reduction of over 80,000 tonnes of CO2e emissions annually. The implementation of this state-of-the-art sorting technology at NARC is projected to reach completion by the end of 2024. 

Novelis sets standards to strengthen Germany and Saxony-Anhalt as a location for sustainable aluminum solutions and impressively demonstrates how the circular economy and economic success can go together. Raising the Bar for Recycled Content 

As NARC celebrates its 10th anniversary, Novelis looks forward to the future, continuing its leadership role in sustainable aluminium production and driving the industry towards a more sustainable, lower-carbon future. Since 2011, Novelis has increased the recycled content in its global product range from 33% to 63%, with a target to achieve 75% by the end of 2030. This milestone reinforces Novelis’ commitment to constantly lower the carbon footprint of its product, aiming towards offering and achieving full circularity in aluminium production.
